Titanic

Titanic is a 1997 film written, produced and directed by James Cameron about the sinking of RMS Titanic. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater respectively, members of different social classes who fall in love during the ship's voyage in 1912.

The main characters and the love story are fictional, but many of the secondary characters (such as members of the crew and some passengers in first and second class) are based on real historical characters and the background shots of the ship Atlantic that open the film.

The film was a huge critical and commercial success, winning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and becoming the highest grossing film of all time, with global revenues of over $ 1.800 billion.

The Spanish actress Penélope Cruz is nominated by the art and cinematographic sciences academy to the Oscars, as the best second actress for her role in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, de Woody Allen.

This nomination makes happy the actress after her failure at the “Golden Globes”, although the film win the price to best comedy but was a collective price, and the actress can’t obtain the price for the best second actress.

This year she can obtain the Oscar, in her 81st edition. Penelope has already obtained in 2007 for her role in the film “Volver” by Pedro Almodobar. This time she will compete with actress like Amy Adams and Viola Davis (“La duda”), Taraji P. Hamon (“El curioso caso de Benjamin Button”) and Marisa Tomei (“The Wrestler.”)

MORE AND MORE AVATAR

“Avatar is the first film of the rest of your life”, or so says a fan on one of the many film lovers' forums. And it cannot be denied that James Cameron's latest film has been a box office hit, making over $1,600 million around the world.

However, there has been a lot of criticism. Cameron was accused of plagiarism in Russia, where they say the film was based on the work of the Strugatsky brothers, World of Noon. Cameron has denied this, and in fact, one of the brothers stated that is was probably just coincidence.

Other criticisms directed at Cameron regard the budget. In its first weekend, Avatar only managed to bring in 70 million dollars, and the pessimists began to say that Fox, the production company, would go bankrupt. But in fact it began to make more and more money. It is predicted that it may earn more than 2,000 million dollars.

Bill Paxton, one of Cameron's best friends, was the first person to read the script for Avatar. He claims that James is a perfectionist, and that no other director would have been able to work under the pressure that Cameron has had over the last five years, especially because his previous film, Titanic, was the most seen film of all time.

Cameron stated in Entertainment Weekly that he has learnt to ignore negative criticism, and intends to continue with the original plan of making Avatar into a trilogy. In fact, the main actors have signed a contract for the three films. Rumour has it that the next part will be out in 2012.

In most countries, Avatar has become the biggest box office hit, including China despite rumours that the Government had taken back all the copies of the film as “it could upset the spectators”. The Government denies this, saying that it was the owners of the cinemas who asked for it to be taken away, as the 3D version was not profitable and the 2D version was not very good. It was replaced by a film of the biography of Confucius. The non-official version of the story is that is was banned because of the similarities between the film and what is happening in rural China.

The Avatar phenomenon is completed by the news that by the end of this year, 3D televisions will be available. The manufacturers claim that by using 3D glasses, you will not only be able to watch specially made 3D programmes, but also any programmes filmed in 2D will become 3D too. The hurry to get these TVs onto the market is definitely down to Avatar.

Cameron claimed he was “The King of the World”. Well, he'll definitely be reigning for quite a long time.
